PRESS RELEASES FROM THE INTERFAITH ALLIANCE (NATIONAL)

(Washington, DC - 11/14/00) More than thirty-five national religious leaders from diverse traditions and political ideologies joined The Interfaith Alliance to call on presidential candidates Governor Bush and Vice President Gore to support a just and fair resolution to the controversy surrounding the outcome of last Tuesday's presidential election.

Diverse religious leaders called on the presidential candidates "to make decisions in the coming days that leave no doubt that every single citizen's vote counts, that justice leaves no one behind, and that the democratic process is worthy of trust and involvement." The statement continues, asking the candidates to recognize that "in this unique moment in our nation's history, it is time for the ideals of our democracy and the core values of our diverse religions to become observable realities." (The statement can be viewed at www.interfaithalliance.org.)

"As divisive and mean-spirited rhetoric dominates the airwaves, and special interest groups begin to enter a new campaign to have their favored candidate declared the winner, we recognize the urgent need for a public debate that is focused on and committed to fairness, not partisan victory, " said the Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, executive director of The Interfaith Alliance.

Speaking to the role of religious leaders, Rev. Gaddy noted that, "the common values of faith propel us toward reconciliation with justice. When this happens, our nation will be strengthened and partisan divides healed. Indeed, if our nation embraces the core religious values that unite our diverse faith traditions, we will discover among us a stronger commitment to justice, truth and integrity."

Earlier this year, both Governor Bush and Vice President Gore endorsed The Interfaith Alliance's Framework of Civility for Political Candidates. In signing the Framework, both candidates agreed to run clean and civil campaigns (as seen at www.civility.net).

"Just as Gore and Bush answered our call to conduct their campaigns with civility, we hope they will heed our call to put aside partisan self-interest to preserve the integrity and trustworthiness of our electoral process. It is clear that what is at stake is larger than either candidate or party. Nothing less is being tested than the strength of our cornerstone democratic principle that every vote counts."

The joint statement has been posted on the Alliance website at www.interfaithalliance.org and religious leaders from around the country can add their names, either on-line or by faxing the religious outreach coordinator at 202-639-6375. For more information about this effort, please contact the Communication Department of The Interfaith Alliance at 202-639-6370.
