The Mississippi Chapter of The Interfaith Alliance sponsored the second
annual 2001 July 4th All-American Picnic at historic Tullis-Toledano Manor
in Biloxi, Mississippi on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico. Picnic
goers were treated to ripe, juicy watermelon in the shade of the great
oaks. The gentle breeze from the Gulf of Mexico offered a refreshing break
from the heat.
| SGI's Messengers of Peace Chorus performed original songs composed by Jane Benham. They also graciously backed the darling Kids of Many Faiths Chorus in singing a patriotic medley. They were children of all ages, from all backgrounds and faith traditions who joined together that day to sing songs in celebration of America. | ![]() |

A Baptist youth group graced us with gospel hymns.
The thunderous pounding and steady rhythm of the SGI Taiko Drum Youth Corp. from New Orleans amazed and delighted the audience. |
| We were treated to a special performance by professional singer/musician,
Catherine Archer.
Children and adults alike enjoyed the space-walk and the community art project. Rousing laughter came from the hula-hoop contest where we were all delighted by the hip action. |

We all got to know each other better through a traditional pagan meeting dance called the Spiral Dance. People holding hands, coming face to face formed a beautiful spiral of humanity. We were awed by the flame thrower who preceded the fireworks on the beach. |
We had many new attendants this year as a result of mail-outs and listings with community events in the local newspapers. More of those attendants became actively involved in The Interfaith Alliance activities and meetings as a result. They all expressed an interest in many people of different faiths and cultures celebrating freedom together and found it to be a great event.
This event truly represents and reminds us of the beauty and diversity America and the freedoms we enjoy. We are now consciously appreciative of these things but how long had it been since we were aware of the precious opportunities we have in this country. We should take the time to remind ourselves and appreciate our treasures every July 4th.
